It is good to be alive. Too much of the time, we forget. We bitch about work, partners, friends, inconvenience, traffic, government. We forget to notice the goodness that is everywhere, especially in our lucky country. We don't remember the thin line between what the great Canadian rocker and writer Neil Young described, in Hey Hey, My My, as the difference between "out of the blue and into the black," or the finality of that: "Once you're gone, you can never come back."

Wed, 16 Dec 2009 19:50:59 -0800 The Tiger Woods - Don Draper Analogy http://ryanmathre.posterous.com/the-tiger-woods-don-draper-analogy http://ryanmathre.posterous.com/the-tiger-woods-don-draper-analogy Last week in a special all "Tiger Woods" mailbag on ESPN.com, one of Bill Simmons astute readers made the interesting anology comparing Tiger Woods with Don Draper from Mad Men.  Simmons explains:

"Like Draper, Tiger is the absolute best at what he does. And like Draper, no matter how much turmoil there is, he will survive.

He then references arguably the most powerful scene from Season 1 when Don makes a sales pitch to a camera company.

He continues:

"It's the best scene in the history of the show. It tells you everything you would ever want to know about Don Draper. Only he knows how he felt, or if he was feeling anything at all. But he should have been feeling something. You could say the same thing about Tiger Woods, a public figure handling a decidedly private matter right now. He needs a Carousel. He needs to go backward. He needs to go round and around and back home again. And he can't."

Sun, 29 Nov 2009 08:30:00 -0800 Wild night in LA http://ryanmathre.posterous.com/wild-night-in-la http://ryanmathre.posterous.com/wild-night-in-la

For those who missed it last night, here is video of the interesting
finish to the UCLA-USC. Leading 21-7 and with less
than a minute left, USC chose to kneel the ball. UCLA responded by
calling a timeout with the hope of getting the ball back.

I'll let the video show what transpired next:

I didn't have any problem with the call but the taunting on the USC side was a little obnoxious.

I've only played around with foursquare for a few weeks but can see its potential.

Last Sunday I cossed off another one of my "Sporting events to attend before I die" when I made the 4 hour road trip to Lambeau Field with three friends.  I wasn't disapointed with the Lambeau experience.  Along with a superb game and a 38-25 victory by the Vikings, I was impressed with the friendly nature of the Green Bay fans.  We enjoyed good natured banter throughout the game with our fellow football fans in Section 108 (1st half) and 346 (2nd half).

Looking forward to crossing another must see sporting event of my "list" next April when I attend a Masters practice round.
